MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Emerson Families,
It’s finally February and we have lots to celebrate. The All School Meeting is on Friday, February 3rd. Due to continued challenges with cold rainy weather, we will hold the meeting inside the Multi-Purpose Room and, due to space limitations, will not be able to include parents. However, we will record the meeting, and share the video via Remind. We will honor Black History Month and Black Lives Matter Week during the meeting. Staff and students will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, written by poet James Weldon Johnson in 1900. This song was first performed in honor of President Lincoln’s birthday and is widely considered to be the Black National Anthem. For many African Americans, singing the song is a way of showing patriotism and hope for the future, considering the plight of racism faced. We will sing the first stanza during the meeting- here are the words and a link to listen on YouTube:
Lift every voice and sing,
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the listening skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
Emerson is proud to join the rest of the school district to celebrate Black Lives Matter Week, which is February 6- 10. According to the BUSD School Board resolution, “... the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action is intended to highlight, uplift and affirm the rich history and contributions of the Black community; to cultivate in Black students a sense of pride, self-worth, and self-love; and to develop a widespread acknowledgment and appreciation for the contributions of black people to our community…”. You can partner with us by learning more about BLM in School here: https://www.blacklivesmatteratschool.com/ and by reading the Kid Friendly BLM Guiding Principles .
You can get involved by encouraging your student to enter the BUSD 2022- 2023 Oratorical Contest. Emerson contestants will perform at the March 3rd All School Meeting and finalists will be invited to the district’s March 20, 2023 showcase. This year’s theme is “Black Joy”. Ms. Lily, Office of Family Engagement and Equity, and Ms. Medina, Emerson Equity Teacher Lead, will mentor interested students during lunch recess. As in years past, we hope to have a strong cadre of student performances. Stay tuned for more details and information.
Take good care,
Jana Holmes

Music Connection at UC Berkeley
The Spring 2023 application period is now open for private tutoring from Music Connection, a student-run volunteer organization that aims to provide free one-on-one music tutoring for students of the Berkeley Unified School District. Instrumental, piano and vocal tutoring are available, however, this is dependent on tutor availability. All students in the private tutoring program will have the opportunity to participate in an end-of-the-semester recital.
If you have signed up before, you will need to fill out the application form each semester you are interested in being matched with a tutor. Lessons will be offered either virtually or in-person depending on which format both students and tutors feel to be most comfortable, effective, and safe.
Private music tutoring applications are due Wednesday, February 22nd, at 11:59 pm PST. Here is the link to the form:https://forms.gle/gPM9x1xNvQDb4STu7
