Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

As we prepare to close out the year, a few bookkeeping items. Report cards, in most cases, will go home on the last day of school in a large manila envelope in your child's backpack. (Third grade teacher, Ms. Davis, will be out the last day of school so her report cards will go home a day or two earlier, when she is there to pass them out.) Be sure to read the report card and enjoy all the progress your child has made this year.

In grades K-4, along with the report cards, you will find two "assignments" to keep your child sharp and ready over the summer. First will be a summer reading log from Ms. Jeannie. This year, rather than tracking minutes read, she'd like them to read a target number of just right books per grade level and just list the titles read. Remember, daily reading keeps your child blossoming in numerous ways. Please keep that growth going over the summer!

The second assignment you will find is a grade level math packet that includes important practice in focus areas for the grade level. Don't forget, students currently in 3rd and 4th may also continue to practice their basic facts with Reflex Math as well. (5th graders will also continue to have access until the end of summer). As is our practice, students who complete these summer assignments will receive a treat from me in the fall.

We are also doing inventory on our library at this time. Ms. Zoe works really hard to keep lots of interesting and exciting books in stock and also to recover any books that are missing. If your child has misplaced or lost a library book, you should have been notified by this time. Please be sure to send in the money to cover the cost of the book right away. Ms. Zoe is also willing to take a comparable book in good condition in lieu of money. This is a very important responsibility and report cards may be held back until library fines are resolved. Thank you for keeping our library full!

Thanks,
Susan Hodge

Recycle Unusable Color Markers—Keep Plastic Out of Landfills

Help keep plastic out of the landfill! Please help us collect and repurpose these unusable markers that you’d normally throw away (any brand) by dropping them in the ColorCycle box in the hallway outside the cafetorium.

Crayola pays shipping to send the markers to a facility where the markers get converted into clean fuel! With the help of schools like ours across the country, the ColorCycle program will keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.

Summer Soak for the Garden

Families, please help keep our beautiful Emerson Edible Garden thriving and help us grow a giant pumpkin for fall by signing up to water the plants one Saturday in July/August.

While most of the garden is watered automatically, we need folks to come by weekly to make sure the system is working and deep-soak selected plants that need more H2O and TLC.

What fun to come and splash some water on some appreciative flora! Signing up for just one soak is fine.  Sign up at tinyurl.com/EmersonWater17

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

State testing has gotten off to a great start. The children are focused and working hard to show all that they know. Third grade will finish up by Friday and fourth and fifth will finish next week. Thank you for getting your children plenty of rest and making sure that they arrive on time daily.

As we concurrently finish up this year and prepare for next year, it would be helpful for us to know if you have any special plans this summer that might delay your start to school in the fall. The first day of school will be Monday, August 27th and we’ll have a full week of school the first week back. Class lists will be posted on Friday, August 24th.  I’ll be here through the end of June and back again the second week of August. Feel free to email me if you have any questions or need to share any information with me.

Sincerely,
Ms. Hodge

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

The month of May has some important events so let's mark those calendars! Read-a-thon pledge envelopes are due this Friday, May 11th to be eligible for prizes. Let's see if we can meet or even beat those numbers from last year. Thursday, May 17th is Open House. This is a great opportunity to visit the school to see the culmination of your child's activities for the school year and to visit other classrooms as well. Of course, there will be baby chicks to visit in Kindergarten and don't miss art portfolios and science displays upstairs. Our last SGC - School Governance Council - meeting of the year is on Wednesday, May 23rd at 5:30 in the library. On the agenda for our last meeting will be a review of our Annual Survey results, a quick budget update, appreciations for current attendees, and election planning for the fall. These meetings are open to the public so please feel free to drop by, especially if you are interested in serving in the future. It takes some time to acclimate to all the terminology so feel free to attend as a guest.

Finally, another reminder that State Testing for grades 3-5 runs from May 22nd through May 31st. It is a set of assessments – two in language arts (reading/writing) and two in math. Our students are well prepared for these tests, generally speaking, and they did quite well last year. In fact, it was their performance that triggered the Distinguished School application! These assessments are taken on Chromebooks and are spread over four days within the testing window listed above. You can help out on the home front by making sure your children are well rested and arrive to school on time, each and every day. The testing periods can be long for some students – everyone works at their own pace – so lots of encouragement and hugs are helpful. Students use headphones during testing which we provide. We also invite you to send in a pair for your student if he or she prefers to use those from home. (We can always use extra sets). We provide lots of encouragement here along with some extra treats to keep the mood and setting upbeat and supportive. Thank you for partnering with us to help your children show what they know and do their very best.

Sincerely,
Ms. Hodge

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

Thank you so much for all the appreciation shared for the office staff and for me over the course of last week. It was so thoughtful of you to send the flowers, notes, gift cards, candy and other tasty treats as a way of saying thank you for all that we do. On the behalf of Sonia and Sandra, we would like to say thank you as well—we love partnering with all of the parents and guardians to make Emerson the very special school that it is. We most certainly couldn't do it without you.

On another note, the teachers and I would like you to be aware of a small change we are making this month. While we traditionally celebrate Mother's Day in May, we are going to transition to a broader and more inclusive way of recognizing the people who care for our children. Rather than a focus just on mothers, we will be celebrating Family Day, so that children can thank any or all of the loved ones who take such wonderful care of them. I hope that works better for all of our families.

Much love and respect,

Ms. Hodge

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

Coming up next month, over the course of two weeks from May 22 to May 31st, students in Grades 3 - 5 will be taking the CAASP (CAlifornia Assessment of Student Performance and Progress). This is a set of four, online assessments in reading, writing, and mathematics. These assessments are meant to assess how all students are progressing toward meeting California grade level standards. Each grade has a slightly different schedule, but all students will have 4 days of testing.

Most students will test on chrome books in their own classrooms while others will work on chrome books in the library or in smaller workspaces if need be. These tests are not timed. Students can work at their own pace and over several periods on the same test, if needed. Basically, we want students to be as comfortable and focused as possible, so we will be setting up optimal "work conditions" for students so they can show what they know.

You can help by making sure your children arrive at school on time, each and every day of testing. They will feel best if they are well rested and sent off with words of encouragement and a good hug. Also, please feel free to send your child with his or her own headphones to use at school (in a labeled baggie) during or even before testing. Please avoid scheduling any appointments or family trips during this period. If you have something unavoidable on your calendar, please notify your classroom teacher and the office immediately so we can make plans to test your children at an alternate time. Thank you for your support!

Ms. Hodge

Final Days of the Read-a-Thon

Are your students discovering new, favorite books? New authors? New graphic novels? When you read to them, are they begging for "just one more" page or chapter? Are they reading instead of, gulp, watching a screen?? Emerson students are fabulous readers and we are so proud of the enthusiasm we've seen for this year's Read-a-Thon.

While we hope the voracious reading continues, the ten days of the Read-a-Thon are coming to an end -- students have through April 29th to read, read, read and have those minutes count toward the Read-a-Thon. Keep up the great work!

BearFacts News
April 19, 2018

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

I can't believe it is mid-April already and we have only 9 weeks of school remaining. While we are all excited about the upcoming summer break, we aren't ready to rest yet. We still have lots to do and we want to make sure we finish strong. To that end, I am sending recommendations for things to do at home that will have a positive impact on your child here at school.

For students in grades 3-5, in addition to nightly reading, we'd like them to practice typing at least twice each week. Touch typing is a very important skill for our students to learn. However, we don't have a lot of time to practice here at school so remind your child to use the link to Typing Club from the Emerson Library website as part of their homework. Our goal for the end of the year is that 3rd graders type 10 wpm (words per minute), 4th graders type 15 wpm, and 5th graders type 20 wpm.   You can see their progress once they log into Typing Club.  To get to Typing Club, go to http://library.berkeleyschools.net/emerson-library/ and click on “typing” (http://sites.berkeley.net/typing/).

Another area that needs more practice for many students and is an expectation in grades 3-5 is memorization of basic facts. To that end, all students in those grades have an account with Reflex Math that they may access on the Emerson Library website as well. To find Reflex Math, go to http://library.berkeleyschools.net/emerson-library/ and click on “Class Projects”, then “Special Class projects” (or go to https://www.reflexmath.com/). This program gives them individualized, targeted practice in the facts they have not yet mastered. Ask your child to show you his or her "fact pyramid" on Reflex Math so you can see how he or she is progressing. If you do not want your child to have screen time at home, feel free to do the old fashioned, but effective flash card method!

For students in Grades K-2, please continue nightly reading. The more your children read at home, the stronger and more confident they'll be reading here at school. Reading for both enjoyment and information are life-long skills that we would like all our students to develop and keep. Thanks for your continued support!

Ms. Hodge

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

I am pleased to share with all the members of our community, that Emerson School has been selected by the California Department of Education as a 2018 Distinguished School. I am very proud of the hard work and dedication all our teachers and staff have put in to making Emerson such a fine school and I am very gratified that we are being honored for this exceptional effort. Emerson is one of 21 elementary schools in Alameda County chosen for the distinction and one of 287 schools statewide.

If you would like to learn more about this award, see the the statement State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson shared in an announcement on April 2nd: "These schools implement outstanding educational programs and practices that help California students realized their potential, and put them on their path to achieve their dreams."

Parents and guardians are also an integral part of this school's success. Thank you to all of you for your involvement and support. Together we have created quite a distinguished little school!

Right away students should begin collecting pledges! Students will have one week to collect pledges. Encourage your readers to reach out to grandparents, aunts/uncles, neighbors and family friends.

Then, starting on Friday, April 20th and going for ten days, Emerson students are going to read, read, read – at school and at home and everywhere in between! There will be prizes for top readers in each grade as well as for the class that reads the most minutes!

This event is designed to improve skills and uncork a love of books through focused reading over a short duration, with a little competition sprinkled in! It’s also an important fundraiser for Emerson. The money raised during the Read-a-Thon supports our entire school community.

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

As you head off for Spring Break, I want to give you a quick update. Next year, we will be hiring a full time, credentialed PE teacher to provide physical education classes for all of our students. All of the elementary schools in Berkeley will also need PE teachers. So, it would be to our benefit to find some possible candidates very quickly. If you know of individuals who might interested and who have their PE single subject credential, please encourage them to email me at susanhodge@berkeley.net.  Spread the word please.

Finally, I can't begin to thank all the individual people who helped create yet another awesome Spring Auction so please let me say, to the whole crew, you folks are amazing. I know there was tons of planning, preparation, and just plain old hard work that went into this event, and what a fine event it was. Food was yummy, drinks were delicious, and auction were items plentiful -- great fun overall. Thank you to each and every one who pitched in and to all of you who attended. A special thank you to teachers for all the events they sponsored and for attending as well. I appreciate you all so much -- now go and rest and have a wonderful Spring Break!

Thanks,
Ms. Hodge

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

Another reminder that it is time again for our annual School Climate Survey. This survey, available online and in hard copy in both English and Spanish, is an important way for all the schools and the district as a whole to evaluate our progress toward creating a safe, inclusive, welcoming, and appropriate school environment for all students and families. It is very important for us to hear from all families so I encourage everyone to participate. As an incentive, I'll be providing small treats to students as surveys are finished. In order for your child/ren to receive the treat, you need to complete the survey and return the cover sheet so I know who gets treats. You may do one survey for all your children, or, if they have different experiences at their school at or at multiple schools, you can complete multiple copies on line or in hard copy.

I highly encourage you to do the survey online at the following link. It saves time for school staff and you have 100% confidentiality. Thank you in advance for your participation. Survey should be completed by March 30th.

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

This Wednesday, our school community took part in the March 14th Day of Action Against Gun Violence. In the morning, teachers provided age appropriate teaching and learning for their students on a range of topics, depending on the age group. Topics included safety, how to make individuals feel more welcome and included, what they could do to make the world better, gun safety, and gun violence. At 10:00 am, all classes and staff gathered in the cafeteria for a whole school teach-in with a focus on hope and empowerment. We saw a video of Kid President, “How to Change the World” and sang-along to Jack Johnson’s song, “With My Own Two Hands.” I spoke directly to the group about taking part in something big: a sit was happening across the nation on this day and about their rights and responsibilities as future citizens. I reminded them that they are important and that what they do matters.  I want them to remember that they can make a difference with “their own two hands.”

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the plate donations. We are fully plated now and we'll be able to continue warming those leftovers you send in for your children's lunches. While it is a lot of work for staff and student service 5th graders to heat food for children, I feel that it is worth it in order to see them eat all those wonderful meals you send. There are a few things that we'd like to avoid such as Cup of Noodles and frozen meals because they take a lot of time to heat/make - not to mention containing loads of sodium. Other things to avoid sending in school lunches would be candy and sugary drinks. Overall, I am proud to say the vast majority of children are doing a fine good job of eating their healthy foods! Thank you again for donating so many plates!

On a separate note, I want to remind parents that students have lots to keep them busy at school each day. We are asking that students do not bring toys, cards, and other items from home which can be distractions or a source of conflict between students. For example, big necklaces, sunglasses, game cards and other similar items can be very distracting to young students in class. The only day of the week that children should be bringing any toys or special items from home is on Fridays. Lastly, I am asking that you keep all "slime" at home everyday. As I told the children at our last All School Meeting. Slime is fun, slime is cool. Keep it at home; not at school. Thank you!

Warmly,
Ms. Hodge

There is one remaining luncheon scheduled for March 21st, which means we have a great opportunity to train next year's coordinator. Please contact Ashleigh Kanat at ashleigh.kanat@gmail.com or Jenna Lewis at jennalewis28@gmail.com to learn more.

BearFacts News
March 1, 2018

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

I'd like to give you an update on how Emerson stays prepared in case of emergency. Each year we establish or reconvene our Safety Committee charged with reviewing our Safety and Disaster plans. We plan the annual drills and create a set of practice scenarios. All staff members have assigned duties during an emergency. We meet in our Emergency Response Teams and visit the Safety Container on the yard to inventory supplies. This year we have made it a point to have half of our drills during the regular school day and half of them after school.

We have monthly fire drills during which we practice a quick and safe exit from the building followed by accounting for every child. Three times a year we hold Duck and Cover drills during which we practice how to be as safe as possible during an earthquake. We also hold a third type of drill which is a combination Lock Down/Evacuation drill. This drill is to practice what we might do if there was a police action in the area and we were ordered to lock down or, in a worst-case scenario, an armed intruder was on campus and we needed to respond with a combination of lock down and evacuation.

During an Armed Intruder Drill, we are very careful to practice in as non-threatening manner as possible. Teachers explain the process in advance, and, during the drill, we emphasize that we are practicing. I am so impressed with how our staff and students have responded during these drills. The entire school has been able to evacuate within 2 minutes in a safe and secure manner. Of course, in the case of real emergency, we would need to respond rapidly in ways that we have not rehearsed. It is my deep hope that we never have to put our practice into real action, but, being able to respond quickly and think on our feet is essential. We will continue to practice and reach out to the parent community for ways in which we can partner in this area.

Warmly,
Ms. HodgeUpcoming Events & Important Dates

Message from the Principal

February 22, 2018

Dear Families,

As I mentioned last week, the second trimester of instruction is ending on Friday, February 23rd. Please expect report cards the following week. The cards are due to be sent home with your children in large manila envelopes on Thursday, March 1st. Included with the report cards will be a form to acknowledge receipt of the card - please send that back to school right away so we know you received this important information. Feel free to include a message to the teacher or request to meet if you have any questions or concerns.

On another note, we still need for paper plates to use in the cafeteria to warm food. If you can send any, we'd appreciate plates in different sizes so we can be as thrifty and ecologically minded as possible when heating your child's food.

Lastly, mark your calendars now for Family Art Night, Friday, March 2nd, 6:00 - 8:00pm.

Thanks,
Ms. Hodge

PTA Enrichment Classes Start Next Week

The Spring Enrichment Classes will begin next week. By now, you should have received the final class information for your student(s). Some reminders:

  • Rosters are posted on the PTA bulletin board in the main hallway. These include the times, instructors, and rooms for all Enrichment Classes.
  • Non-Kids World Families: Please make sure you arrive a few minutes early to pick up your child in their enrichment classroom. We do not provide supervision between and after classes.
  • Please make sure your child knows which days he or she will be going to Enrichment. We do our best to make sure students get to class, but a reminder from parents is also really helpful.

Message from the Principal

February 15, 2018

Dear Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at last week's assembly in celebration of Black History Month. It was incredibly moving for me to watch our students on stage sharing information about African Americans who are taking on leadership roles across our nation. I hope you enjoyed it as well.

Coming up next week is the end of the second trimester grading period. That means that we have taken a bit of a pause to assess all students to see how they are progressing toward meeting grade level standards and/or their personal goals. Art, science, and music teachers are also reflecting on and measuring student progress. Teachers are completing report cards so that you may receive this important information along with updates on students work habits, social emotional growth, attendance, etc.

Report cards are due to be sent home with students on Thursday, March 1st, along with a notice that you should return, confirming that you have received the report card. If you have questions or would like to speak with the classroom teacher, you may indicate that desire on your form and the classroom teacher will get back to you to schedule a time to chat.  Thank you so much and have a wonderful weekend.

Thanks,
Ms. Hodge

SPECIAL MEETING: BUSD's Director of Special Education Recruitment

Special Meeting
February 13th!

 SPECIAL MEETING:
BUSD's Director of Special Education Recruitment
February 13th: 5:30-700 pm

Dear BUSD Families:

BUSD's Director of Special Education, Lisa Graham, will be relocating with her family this June.

BUSD has enlisted the services of a search firm to recruit for the position, and former BUSD Superintendent, Bill Huyett, will be leading those recruitment efforts on behalf of McPherson & Jacobson, LLC.

On Tuesday, February 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. an input session has been scheduled for parents in the Board Room at 1231 Addison Street

This session will provide an opportunity for parents to answer questions and to provide input to the search firm and its lead recruiter regarding  or skills that should be prioritized in our search.

We recognize that notice is somewhat short here, yet we are trying to be very aggressive in this search which means getting out into the candidate pool comparatively early in the school year.

Pasquale Scuderi
Associate Superintendent
Berkeley Unified School District
510-644-6257
