HEART OF EMERSON FUNDRAISING

Last call for donations before we head into Winter Break! Of course you are welcome to donate in the new year as well, but the funding collected by year-end will determine the range and scope of offerings the Emerson PTA is able to secure for the following school year. Donate and continue to track our progress here: https://emersonelementary.org/heart-of-emerson

Congratulations to our Giving Tuesday winners! Katie Caygill-Knapp and family (pictured above) won tickets to the Oakland Zoo, and Adriana Mendoza won a $50 Topgolf voucher! Thanks to everyone who has donated to Heart of Emerson so far.

WINTER EQUITY CIRCLE SERIES KICKS OFF IN JANUARY!

The PTA welcomes you to sign up for the Winter Equity Circle. We will meet for six sessions, with a kick-off on January 20, and subsequent meetings on Thursday evenings through February (1/25, 2/1, 2/8, 2/22, 2/29). Dinner and childcare are provided - RSVP here. Hear from a past participant about her experience participating in a past Equity Circle here: Why Equity Circle? and visit our program site at https://emersonelementary.org/equity.

PTA AFTERSCHOOL CLASSES FOR SPRING 2024

As we head into Winter Break, the PTA Afterschool Classes Team is already planning the Spring 2024 Session!

Our goal is to provide EVERYONE at Emerson with after school on-site care options. PTA Afterschool Classes are a complicated and time-consuming project, which is why some BUSD elementary schools do not even offer PTA Afterschool Classes.

In addition to enrichment, PTA Afterschool Classes provide an unmet need for part-time afterschool care for up to a third of our Emerson families.

Registration: January 12 (subject to change)

Program Dates: January 30 - May 24

REDUCED Schedule: There will only be ONE class after main dismissal (2:25p - 3:25p on M/T/Th/F, 1:30p - 2:30p on Wednesdays)

TK/Kindergarten Classes: 1:30p - 2:20p M/T/W/Th/F (depends on instructor availability)

Instructors: similar to Fall 2023, note that we'll have Spanish Language (not Mandarin)

The number of scholarships depends on paid spots meeting minimum class enrollment. Due to the reduced schedule, there will be fewer scholarships in Spring 2024 compared to Fall 2023. Families can sign up for PTA Afterschool Classes even if they are already enrolled in LEARNS/Kids’ World, and they can request scholarships as well.

Unless noted otherwise, scholarships are funded by each instructor, NOT the PTA (1 scholarship per 6 or 7 paid enrollments), and those spots are held for ONLY scholarships. The Team works with Lily Howell (lilyhowell@berkeley.net) of the Office of Family Engagement and Equity (OFEE) to proactively offer scholarships to families who might not otherwise reach out.

To request a scholarship for your child, please fill out this form:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1exYsvaVM1CZaO0Bb4QXk_7Zm0e8UO7SQpukNNnIw3Os/edit?ts=64e8f7d4#responses

If you find value in these after school classes providing on-site care for part-time needs, please volunteer to help or lead this program for Spring 2024 and the future. This program cannot continue without the addition of more volunteers, and currently it is short-staffed. Join us at: enrichment@emersonelementary.org

ART CORNER WITH MS. AMES

SIX PHOTOS OF MIXED MEDIA SNOW PEOPLE ART MADE BY KINDERGARTNERS AND FIRST GRADERS

Even though it doesn't snow in Berkeley, we love to use snowy scenes as an inspiration in art class. There are so many great children's books and other sources of wintry art. Kindergartners created mixed media snow people using paper, buttons, fabric and more. First graders created snow globes by coloring a coffee filter with marker and then spritzing it with water to spread the colors to look a little bit like the Northern Lights.

LCAP LISTENING SESSIONS

BUSD District Leadership will begin hosting listening sessions for the community in January. You are encouraged to attend one of the following listening sessions:

  • 1/10/24, 10am - 12pm (location/format TBD)

  • 1/11/24, 6pm - 8pm (BHS Library)

  • 1/16/24, 6pm - 8pm (Virtual)

  • 1/23/24, 6pm - 8pm (location/format TBD)

What is the LCAP?

A key accountability requirement of the state’s Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), the LCAP is a three-year plan that every district and charter school must create and update annually with input from the community. The LCAP is intended to explain how the district will use state funds to improve educational outcomes for all students based on eight state priorities, with special attention to high-needs students for whom the district receives additional money.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

BUSD Community, we encourage you to join the City of Berkeley in celebrating Black History Month this February!

You can participate in the Black History Month Contest with an original piece of visual art, oral tradition, music, literature, historical exhibit, or dance.

Entries are due by February 3rd, and a community celebration will take place on February 17th, from 12-5 pm at the Henry Ramsey Senior Center.

Cash prizes will be awarded to winning entries! See details in the flyer linked below and reach out to berkeleyblackhistory@gmail.com with any questions.

HOUR OF CODE

Hour of Code was a success last week! Students in each grade were introduced to computer programming concepts through fun and interactive games tailored to their particular age group. Thank you to the teachers for making room in the day for this special curriculum and to the parent volunteers who helped out in the classrooms. Special thanks to Kaolin and Amy Fire for organizing this school-wide event! Kaolin made his way to classrooms throughout the week to give a coding introduction and mini-lessons. The kids had a blast and learned some coding fundamentals at the same time.

This year TK, K, and 1st Grades learned to program little fuzzballs through mazes, some of them even pushing through to conditionals or making their own mazes to follow! There was a lot of joy and excitement as they saw that they could program and debug! https://hourofcode.com/kodable-pre

2nd Grade did Flappy Code, introducing them to blocks-style programming, loops, and event triggers. Walkthrough: https://youtu.be/2lFvVAw2Ago

3rd Grade did Blocks Jumper, expanding their blocks-style programming to a full suite of libraries, conditionals, widgets, and a lot more room to explore their own creativity. Walkthrough: https://youtu.be/uf8krjJAymE

4th and 5th Grades did AI is a Hoot, where they (again) expanded their blocks-style programming to include developing their own machine learning models to recognize different human "poses," controlling an owl by raising their hands, standing up, or squatting. Walkthrough: https://youtu.be/ODvl4QPZ8s4

Finally, a HUGE thank you to the many parent volunteers who took time out of their day to share their love of being creative with computers and problem-solving who helped make Emerson’s Hour of Code 2023 a success!

If you have any questions about the hour of code, next steps, or more details on what your children learned, feel free to reach out to hourofcode@emersonelementary.org — or visit https://code.org for a full suite of exercises!

Ms. Davis’s second grade class participated in Hour of Code, focusing on Flappy Code, blocks-style programming, loops, and event triggers.

LIBRARY CORNER

AUTHOR-ILLUSTRATOR VISIT

Last Wednesday, students in grades TK-3rd were treated to an author-illustrator visit from Tony Piedra and Mackenzie Joy, who presented their new book, One Tiny Treefrog, and gave a drawing demonstration! The students loved learning more about the red-eyed tree frog, what inspired the authors to write their book, and even how to draw their very own frog! If you'd like to order a copy of their book, Mrs. Dalloway's is offering 15% off HERE!

ART CORNER WITH MS. AMES

AUTHOR’S VISIT CREATES SPECIAL ART EXPERIENCE

I read Mackenzie Joy's book, Wallflowers, with the third grade artists. It is a wonderful book that explores the world of those kids who don't mind being the quiet ones – ones who don't mind blending in (we want to be heard, we just don't want to have to SHOUT!)

In the book, Mackenzie draws the children in clothing that matches the wall behind them. We had a great discussion in class, pondering if we like to blend in or stand out (some kids said they are one way at home and another way at school). For our art project we created a patterned wall and then made self portrait figures that either contrasted or blended in with the wall.

After the authors' visit (which was about a different book they co-wrote) we invited them out into the hall and unveiled the art that we made inspired by Mackenzie's book. It was such a thrill! She was so touched and impressed by the kids' work.

MS. AMES' OPEN STUDIO DECEMBER 9th AND 10th, 11AM - 4PM

If you or your kids especially love art, you may enjoy stopping by Ms. Ames' backyard art studio in El Cerrito. Although she primarily creates wall art with a focus on trees now, she used to work with glass and other materials. She's clearing things out and has fused glass plates and jewelry and handmade gift items on sale. She'll also have a gel printing station and a little gift just for showing up, so don't be shy if you are curious.

HOur of Code is Next Week!

(Hour of code takes place the week of December 4 - 8)

Emerson will join thousands of schools worldwide during National Computer Science week for Hour of Code, a global movement to introduce kids to coding while making it fun. All Emerson students will participate in fun and interactive computer lessons led by Emerson parent volunteers. This year, the theme for Hour of Code is Creativity with Artificial Intelligence. Now, more than ever, with the attention on artificial intelligence, it's important for educators to engage students in computer science, coding, and AI. Shout-out to Amy and Kaolin Fire (parents of Fenris and Phoenix) and Ms. Suzuki, 4th grade teacher, for coordinating volunteers to help with this school-wide project.

Find your child's Hour of Code time slot and sign up to volunteer at: https://bit.ly/EmersonHOC2023 (no coding or computer experience needed)

Thank you, Steven and Jessica

Check out the parking lot from the final Cal Football Fundraiser of 2023!  Big shoutout to Steven Wilson and Jessica Wilson (parents of Langston, Grade 2, and Tyler, Grade 6) who have coordinated this important fundraiser for many years.  The PTA is looking for new leads for the 2023- 2024 Football season.  We hope parents will step up to help us keep this tradition going. Please consider and reach out to the PTA if you are willing!

Underwater Scenes by TK

TK artists used different colors of paint to create beautiful painted papers.  We cut out the papers into circles. We made an opening for the mouth and used the triangular piece we cut out as the tail.  After gluing the fish into our ocean scene, we added eyeballs and seaweed.  Great work, TK artists!

We are thrilled to announce a special event to express our gratitude to our supportive community. We will be holding an online random drawing for a fantastic prize: a Family Pass for four to the Oakland Zoo! Here’s how you can participate: Every family that donates any amount to the Heart of Emerson on Giving Tuesday (11/28) will be automatically entered into this random drawing: https://emersonelementary.org/heart-of-emerson. GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Social Studies Adoption – Curriculum Fair (K-5)

BUSD is conducting a K-5 Social Studies Curriculum adoption during the 2023-24 school year. As part of this process, BUSD will host a K-5 Social Studies Curriculum Fair on November 30th from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at 2020 Bonar St. This curriculum fair is open to families, educators, and our wider Berkeley community. During this fair, there will be presentations from the curriculum providers that BUSD will be piloting during the Winter and Spring of 2024. There will also be tabling and Q&A opportunities. Click here to view the flier for this event.

Chronic Absenteeism Rate

We are happy to share with you that the district’s chronic absenteeism rate continues to decline. At the end of October, the district’s chronic absenteeism rate was 12.4%. At the end of September, the rate was 14.6%. Over the same time frame last year, the rate was 15% at the end of October 2022. At Emerson, we had 95% average daily attendance for the month of October 2023, with a low of 92% in TK and a high of 96% in 2nd Grade. However, we must continue to ride this momentum. Historically, the months of November and December have seen spikes in the chronic absenteeism rate increasing. So, let’s continue to encourage and support daily student attendance with students and their families. Together we can reach our district-wide goal of a 5% decrease from last school year.

Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore School Benefit Fundraiser

The Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore 15th Annual School Benefit Fundraiser is coming up soon! It runs this weekend, from Friday, November 10 - Sunday, November 12. During this time, shop either online or in the store and Mrs. Dalloway's will donate 15% of the pre-tax sales to Emerson. Everything applies to the fundraiser: kids' books, cookbooks, travel guides, merchandise, gift certificates, EVERYTHING!

Spread the word to your family and friends, and their purchases will benefit Emerson as well. Anyone anywhere can participate--they just have to make it clear that they're shopping for Emerson BERKELEY either at in-store checkout or online in the Order Comments field. Gift certificates can be purchased in person and online.

NOTE: Emerson Oakland is also participating so it's CRITICAL that you indicate that you’re shopping for Emerson BERKELEY to be sure the donation funds go to the correct school.

If you cannot make it to Ms. Dalloway’s this weekend, consider contributing to our PTA’s ongoing Heart of Emerson fundraising campaign.

MONTHLY LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Families,

Let me be the first to say Happy Holidays! Now that we have enjoyed Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos, we anticipate a busy November and December. Stay tuned for upcoming school events, such as the monthly All School Meetings, musical assemblies, Family Literacy Night, and more! After the success of the PTA Fall Festival, we look forward to more opportunities to strengthen our community bonds.

Thank you for connecting with classroom teachers for the Parent/Teacher conferences. We hope these informative meetings helped you understand the school curriculum, expectations, and your child’s progress. You are always welcome to reach out to Emerson staff with your questions and concerns. The easiest way is via email and you can find the list of addresses at https://emersonelementary.org/teachers-staff

TK and Kindergarten Tours are kicking off this month, beginning on Thursday, November 16th. If you are a parent of an incoming student or know of a parent, please direct them to https://emersonelementary.org/kindergarten-tour-signup/ to sign up for an in-person campus visit. Tours will conclude on Thursday, January 18th. Make sure you don’t miss the first enrollment round for elementary and middle school 2024 school year registration, which begins January 8, 2024. For more information check out the district website at https://www.berkeleyschools.net/admissions/

Did you know that Emerson has a positive behavior incentive program? Staff are trained to use the Teacher Toolbox, which is a research based social and emotional program that develops resilience, self-mastery, and empathy for others. As a parent, you can partner with us by learning more about the program and reading the available children’s books at home. Here is a link to the Toolbox Booklist, which can be accessed online. In addition, students are rewarded for good behavior with “Caught Being Good” (a.k.a. “CBG”) tickets that are turned in at the main office. Every Friday, students’ names are randomly selected and announced over the intercom. Students then come to the Principal’s office to be rewarded with a small prize. We are proud of our programs that emphasize positivity at Emerson.

As you plan for the holidays, please keep our ‘Heart of Emerson’ fundraising campaign in mind. During my five years at Emerson, I have realized how important the community donations are for our school program. Will you help us maintain the excellent comprehensive program we have here, which includes Art and P.E. for all students, field trips, materials and supplies, and much more? We are asking each family to contribute $700 (more if you are able, or less according to need). Donate today at https://emersonelementary.org/heart-of-emerson, and write us off on your end of the year taxes. We thank you!

Take care,

Jana Holmes

CELEBRATING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ HERITAGE MONTH

November is Indigenous Peoples’ Heritage Month, also known as Native American Heritage Month, which is an important time of year for our community to reflect on the vital role of the first and original stewards of these lands we now call the United States. Our schools reside on xučyun (Huichin), the ancestral lands of the Lisjan Ohlone (Leeshawn) and Muwekma Ohlone tribes. We acknowledge and celebrate their ongoing role in Berkeley and their current day activism to preserve sacred shellmound sites, revitalize Indigenous practices and the Chochenyo language, and to rematriate land back to Indigenous stewardship. We recognize and affirm that globally, Indigenous peoples continue to be impacted by the legacies of colonization and we uplift their collective resilience.

ART CORNER WITH MS. AMES

5th Graders completed this work earlier this year. They each wrote a brief phrase about themselves and then carefully wrote the letters in a grid. We looked at the work of Paul Klee for inspiration - he often used a grid in his compositions and he even wrote out a very long poem in this way. Artists made sure that their letters touched the top and bottom of the squares so that they would create interesting negative shapes around the letters. They can be hard to read, but that's part of the fun of this style of art.

EQUITY CORNER

CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY OF OUR COMMUNITY

In October, Emerson honors the rich diversity of our communities, celebrating Latine/x Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15), LGBTQ+ History Month (Oct), and Filipino American History Month (Oct). BUSD's Ethnic Studies Teacher Joemy Ito-Gates has compiled these excellent resources for teachers and caregivers!

LGBTQ+ History Month

Origins

The recognition of LGBTQ History Month was born out of an idea from a Missouri high school teacher, Rodney Wilson, who, in 1994, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and lesbian history, and gathered other teachers and community leaders. They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur in the month of October. In 1994, a coalition of education-based organizations in the U.S. designated October as LGBT History Month. We recognize leaders and freedom fighters of the LGBTQ+ community, including Marsha P. Johnson, Urvashi Vaid, Edith Windsor, Audre Lorde, Harvey Milk, among many others.

To learn more about LGBTQ+ History, visit: https://lgbthistorymonth.com/background

BUSD celebrates the LGBTQ+ community

BUSD celebrates, affirms, and highlights the deep history and significant achievements of the LGBTQ+ community in our schools and our community. BUSD has created a webpage of resources, of note are highlights from wonderful BUSD staff, including our own Emerson staff. This section is called “Lifting Up LGBTQ+ Voices,”

Author Jessica Kim comes to Emerson!

Author Jessica Kim at Emerson

Korean-American middle grade author Jessica Kim visited the Emerson 4th and 5th graders last Friday, October 13th to talk about her newest book, “Make a Move, Sunny Park!” She discussed the writing process and how her cultural identity inspires her stories. She also took students’ questions and signed a ton of copies of her books for the classrooms and library! It was a wonderful event and we felt so lucky to have her visit!

HEART OF EMERSON FUNDRAISING

https://emersonelementary.org/heart-of-emerson

The Heart of Emerson fundraising campaign is in full swing! This is the one major annual campaign to secure your financial support for our school. This fundraising advances the Emerson education beyond the level of district funding and support that our students would otherwise experience.

As of this week, we have received nearly $42,000, which is a great start, but we still have a long way to go to meet our $195,000 fundraising target! Track our progress through the Heart of Emerson page, which also lists the ways your donations are put to use, supporting your child’s education and the school community:

If you weren't aware, we have a Shop for Emerson page where Emerson receives a portion of sales through these companies. This week we are highlighting the Bay Area Experience and a Q&A with founder and Emerson parent, Mark Otis. If you would similarly like to support Emerson through ongoing donations or royalties, please get in touch: fundraising@emersonelementary.org

Q&A with Emerson parent, Mark Otis, about the Bay Area Experience

1) What is the Bay Area Experience and what is your connection to Emerson Elementary?

Bay Area Experience is a community-based real estate group. We are centered on education for the community and events for the public to educate those that are not familiar with owning, selling, or buying property for personal or business use. We are associated with Emerson by our Founder Mark Otis who has a child attending Emerson. He wants the best for them and to increase the campus' amenities and functionality for his child and the rest of the students that attend.

2) What drew you to the idea of donating to the school?

We wanted to donate to the school because of the uncertainty in today's economy and government programs. By helping out in the way we can, we will not only be able to help our family's school but provide the community visibility of our mission.

3) What has been your or your child's favorite activity or event that has been made possible through donations to the Emerson PTA?

Our child's favorite activity has been P.E. and field trips. The excitement created through moving and exploring is underrated and must continue for our children. Bay Area Experience intends to help this continue.

Thank you!

Celebrating Filipino American History Month

Picture of farm workers in the Delano Grape Strike

Farmworkers during the Delano Grape Strike, 1965

October is Filipino History Month. The first recorded presence of Filipinos in the continental United States occurred on October 18, 1587, when “Luzones Indios” came ashore from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza and landed at what is now Morro Bay, California.

In 2009, U.S. Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month in the United States. Filipino Americans have contributed significantly to the U.S, fighting against injustices like racial violence, anti-miscegenation laws, labor inequalities, and housing discrimination, to name a few. One such example is the contribution to the labor movement by way of farm worker and leader Larry Itliong who, along with Cesar Chavez, led the Delano Grape Strike in 1965. The efforts of the farm workers and leaders paved the way for a strong labor movement and the advancement of worker’s rights in this country. Another is Filipino American journalist Maria Ressa, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021 for her efforts to safeguard freedom of expression (especially of the press) in the Philippines. Other Filipino-American figures include Chief Justice Tani Gorre Cantil-Sakauye, now retired, is the 28th chief justice of California State Supreme Court, and Rob Bonta, the current Attorney General of the State of California. There are also Filipino-Americans in entertainment like H.E.R, Bruno Mars, and Olivia Rodrigo, to name a few.

To learn more about Filipino History, visit Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS)

See also the PBS documentary called Caretakers, which highlights the sacrifices  and contributions of Filipino American nurses and health care workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

California has recognized October 25th as Larry Itliong Day!

ART CORNER WITH MS. AMES

COLOR WHEELS

Students in first through third grade have been learning so much about color.  From mixing primaries to creating secondaries and mixing white with color to create tints, color mixing is so much fun! Third graders created color wheels with 12 colors (starting with just the three primaries). They also created these works inspired by the artist Sonia Delaunay using just two primaries and white to create as many different colors as possible. These are on display in the upstairs hallway if you'd like to see them more closely.

EQUITY CORNER

LATINE/X STORYTELLING NIGHT!

On October 10th, fourth grade teacher and Equity Lead, Ms. Medina, hosted the second annual Latine/x Storytelling Night. Families gathered in the Multi-Purpose Room to hear stories read aloud by Emerson staff and students. Emerson families were able to share what this important month means to them and to out larger community. We also enjoyed dulces (candy), pan dulce (sweet bread) and agua de Jamaica and agua de pina beverages. Thank you to everyone who attended this fun and meaningful event!

MONTHLY LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Families,

It’s the ‘Heart of Emerson’ fundraising campaign season! Your generous contributions help Emerson maintain the outstanding academic and social-emotional program that our students enjoy. With your help, we are able to offer Physical Education and Art classes to all grade levels. Classrooms are fully-equipped with academic supplies and students experience hands-on learning through field trips. We fund an Office Attendance Clerk, professional development training for staff, parent education programs, and much more. We couldn’t do it without you! Please consider a generous donation- we are asking those who are able to donate $700 per family– if you can give more, please do! Here is the link to donate.

The month of October is a busy one! If you haven’t done so already, please reach out to your classroom teacher to schedule your Parent/Teacher Conference during the week of October 23rd. Students will be released early all week, with TK and Kinder dismissed at 12:30pm and Grades 1-5 at 1:10pm. Kids World classes will be in session but there will NOT be PTA After School Classes. There will NOT be school on Friday, October 27.

We are enjoying Latinx Heritage Month here at Emerson. Students have been learning about Latinx Culture and History in the classrooms, and we are pleased to offer the Second Annual Latinx Bilingual Storytelling Night hosted by Ms. Medina next Tuesday, October 10 from 6:00- 7:00 p.m. in the Emerson Multi-Purpose Room. Ms. Medina will read children’s books in Spanish and families will be invited to share why Latinx Heritage Month is important to them. This event is open to all, and we hope to see you there!

You are invited to the Emerson Playground on Saturday, October 21st for the PTA-sponsored Fall Festival. This will be a great opportunity to play games, enjoy treats, and have fun as a school community. Save the date and more information is coming.

The annual Halloween Parade will take place after lunch recess at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 31st. Parents are welcome to meet us on the blacktop to join our parade down College Avenue. Students should come to school dressed in their costumes. We will have donated costumes in the office for students who do not have one. Refrain from sending your child in scary costumes that include blood or weapons that can scare our younger students. We ask that you avoid costumes that represent a person’s culture. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or your child’s teacher.

I would like to end this message by saying thank you to everyone volunteering this year. Our School Site Council is newly-elected and we welcome Shahram Aarabi, Jeffery Cross, Nancy Gage, Diana Gordon, and Karla Schlags to the team. Thank you to our Cal Football parking volunteers who have spent game days on the blacktop raising money for our school. Shout out to the PTA After School Enrichment team and parent volunteers who have supported this program. Big Smile to the PTA fundraising team who have kicked off the Heart of Emerson! We are off to a strong start, and we appreciate your help!

Sincerely,

Jana Holmes

YEARBOOK EDITOR STILL NEEDED

We still have no one handling the 2023-24 Emerson Yearbook. It can be a solo project, or you can assemble a team of contributors. Online yearbook platforms are available to streamline designing and printing the book, and handle orders—we are happy to share what we've used recently. The bulk of putting Emerson's yearbook together happens January to April, though it's nice to start capturing photos now. If you're interested in taking this on, reach out to Michelle Falise (mfalise@gmail.com). The kids love the book, and it's a nice send off at the end of the school year!

WANTED: YEARBOOK EDITOR

Hello, Emerson Community! We currently have no one handling the 2023-24 Emerson Yearbook. It can be a solo project, or you can assemble a team of contributors. Online yearbook platforms are available to streamline designing and printing the book, and handle orders—we are happy to share what we've used recently. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: BE KIND TO TEACHERS

Greetings Emerson Parents!

This year, with the support of the PTA, we are thrilled to introduce an exciting and heartwarming initiative known as Random Acts of Kindness (RAK).

RAK is an anonymous gift-giving program, akin to "Secret Santa.” Throughout the year, classroom teachers will receive 4-6 small but thoughtful gifts on random occasions – completely unexpected. The gifts might be morning coffee and pastry, a bouquet of flowers, a captivating book, a yoga pass, etc.

Each classroom teacher will be paired with a dedicated RAK Parent who is responsible for selecting and delivering the RAK gifts. The identity of the RAK Parent will remain a secret until the end of the year.

We are in search of a few enthusiastic volunteers to become RAK Parents!

Becoming a RAK Parent is open to all Emerson Parents and guardians. The only requirement is a willingness to purchase thoughtful gifts and deliver them to the school. RAK Parents are eligible for reimbursement for their gifts by the PTA. Your chosen RAK teacher doesn't have to be your child's current teacher; it could be someone from your child's past or a teacher you admire and respect.

If you are interested in becoming a RAK Parent, email your name, your phone number, and your first and second teacher preferences to RAKProgramEmerson@gmail.com

Sincerely,

David Rose

RAK Coordinator, Noah 4th

PAINT BRUSH SKILLS

Kindergarteners drew all kinds of lines and practiced paint brush skills by painting with water on top of their marker lines. We learned that Mr. Paintbrush does not like it when we mess up his hair style!

SEPTEMBER STUDENT SHOUT OUTS!

ART CORNER WITH MS. AMES

Warm and Cool Colors in the Art Room

At the beginning of the school year I like to have all of Emerson's artists focus on the Elements of Art— line, shape and color, especially. Second graders learned about the warm and cool colors. Even though real birds in nature would prefer to camouflage themselves, for art class we want to have contrast, helping our warm birds show up against a cool birdhouse or a cool bird show up against a warm house.

Emerson 2nd grade artists learning about warm and cool colors by making birdhouse art

ART REQUEST: Books for our artists?

When I teach art to the kids at Emerson, we often use books to inspire our projects.  Sometimes I use books from my own collection or from our library.  Other times I show kids a video of the book on YouTube. There are a few books I would love to add to the Art Room collection if you are inclined to purchase one for us. I prefer to use all of my PTA funds to keep the art room well stocked in quality art materials rather than on books that I could find on YouTube (Thank you PTA!), but there are a handful of great books I'd really like to have in hard copy. One was even written by my El Cerrito neighbor a few doors up and I have a great lesson planned for it!

Thank you for considering! Here's the link.

MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Families,

It was good to see many of you at Back To School Night! In my fifth year as principal, I continue to be inspired by this community. The Emerson staff are experienced and have high expectations for students. They collaborate to design lessons that meet the needs of our students, and regularly review our assessment data in order to provide interventions as appropriate. Most of the staff have been here for many years, and either have a child here now or a child who attended here previously. My child is older now, but if he were elementary age, I would enroll him at Emerson because this is a school filled with passion for education and a love of children.

As a principal, I strive to build relationships with the students. These first two weeks of school, I have visited all the classrooms to introduce myself, explain what I do, and review the school expectations. I’ve had a lot of fun doing that, and it’s been a great reminder of why I do this job. I started out as a high school English teacher and have worked at every grade level; therefore, I know what we are preparing the students for by the time they get to high school. Our hope is that Emerson students will secure a strong foundation in academics, while learning to value kindness and the joy of education.

Students here benefit from a comprehensive program, which includes Art and PE at every grade level. Students also enjoy field trips to places such as UC Berkeley, Crab Cove, Angel Island, and many more. We are able to offer these programs through generous contributions from our community, via the ‘Heart of Emerson’ fundraising campaign. You will be hearing more about ‘Heart of Emerson’, and we hope you will plan now to budget a contribution to us this year.

Another way you can help our school is by completing the Free/Reduced Lunch form by Oct. 1st. We went from zero dollars to $40,000 in one year, simply because families filled out the form, whether they thought they qualified, whether your child eats school lunch, or not. Please help by completing the form here: https://secure.ezmealapp.com/ApplicationScreen.aspx

We would like to partner with you to help us meet our THREE school-wide goals. The first goal is LITERACY. We are focusing on improved reading and writing outcomes, and staff will participate in trainings with literacy consultants provided by the district. You can help by reading with your child at home and completing nightly homework.

Our second goal is ATTENDANCE.  Emerson has a higher truancy rate than the district average. Please do your very best to have your child on campus when the gates open at 8:00 am. The gates close at 8:10 am.  Plan your trips and vacations during Thanksgiving, Winter, or Spring Break. Each day of school is important and we want your child here.

Our third goal is EQUITY. We are doubling down on equity, which means meeting all students and families where they are at. We will continue to honor the BUSD Resolutions to support AAPI Month, Black Lives Matter, The Welcoming Schools Curriculum (which support the LGBTQ community), and more. Check out the new interactive bulletin board in the main hallway which celebrates the many languages we speak here, and add your family's information to it. We will continue to offer Equity workshops for parents and hope you will join us on September 21st for the Meeting on the Bridge–the topic is selecting children’s books for global awareness. Our staff will receive equity training as well, which will help us develop culturally responsive lesson plans, which have been shown to increase student engagement and learning.

We invite you to get involved by joining the PTA and School Site Council, so you can make new friends, join our community, and give your input to help us reach our goals. Check out the Remind messages and BearFacts for more information about how to volunteer.

I’d like to invite you to reach out to me with any questions or concerns throughout the school year. I like to say I have an open door policy. Please email me, call me or see me at the gate to the school in the morning.  It is my privilege to help with your child's education.

Sincerely,

Jana Holmes

ART CORNER WITH MS. AMES

1st Grade Owls

After reading a story of a young owl who had to try many, many times to fly (“Abracadabra! The Magic of Trying" by Maria Loretta Giraldo, Illustrated by Nicoletta Bertelle), we looked at how the illustrator created texture by using lines. We drew many different kinds of lines for our bodies and then added more collage and crayon details to complete these fun owls. They are hanging up by the library if you'd like to take a closer look.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Caregivers,

Thank you for your patience with the Shelter-In-Place that occurred on August 29, 2023.  The safety procedures were implemented in response to a bomb threat that was made at nearby Chabot Elementary in Oakland. This horrible threat was made to discourage Affinity Playdates for families of color in OUSD. Our Superintendent Ford Morthel and local police decided to secure the Emerson and John Muir campuses out of an abundance of caution.

I am thankful that the Emerson staff responded quickly with the goal of keeping our students safe. I appreciate that some parents have contacted me directly with feedback.  Emerson staff had an emergency meeting after school to discuss what went well and where we can improve.

We realize that safety emergencies do occur and we will fine-tune our response to each unique situation.  If your child would like to debrief with one of our School Therapists, please email me at janaholmes@berkeley.net.

If you are not signed up for the Remind messages, which is our primary communication tool in an emergency, please do so by sending a text to 81010 @7f6fb.

Take care,

Jana Holmes

MESSAGE FROM THE PTA PRESIDENT

Dear Emerson Families,

I hope this message finds you in high spirits and looking forward to the exciting school year ahead. It is with great pride and honor that I assume the role of PTA President for the 2023/2024 academic year. Together, we have the power to make a positive impact on our children's education and create memorable experiences for them.

As an integral part of our school community, your feedback and input are invaluable to us. We strive to create the most effective Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) that caters to the needs and aspirations of our students.

To achieve this, we kindly request you to take a few minutes to fill out our PTA survey by clicking on the following link: https://forms.gle/LX23hCunjYeq8tNp8

Your participation in this survey will provide us with essential information about your expectations, concerns, and suggestions regarding the PTA. By understanding your perspective, we can tailor our initiatives and activities to better serve our students and families.

As a PTA, our primary goal is to serve as a bridge between you and your child's school. We are here to facilitate volunteering opportunities and encourage your involvement in both classroom-specific activities and wider school events. Your active participation will not only strengthen the bond between families, but it will also enrich the educational journey of our students.

I invite you to join our PTA by clicking on this link https://emersonelementary.org/pta-membership

By becoming a member, you will have a voice in shaping our future plans and initiatives. We are currently in the early stages of planning some truly extraordinary events, so your input is vital to ensure we cater to everyone's needs and preferences.

Additionally, I would like to echo Mrs. Holmes' call for improved attendance. We understand that life can sometimes throw unexpected challenges our way, but we firmly believe that consistent school attendance plays an integral role in your child's academic success. If there is anything we can do as a PTA to support you in ensuring your child arrives at school on time every day, please do not hesitate to reach out. Together, we can find solutions that benefit everyone involved.

Calling All Superheroes: Join the PTA and Save the Day!

We have an urgent need for volunteers, and trust me, we have plenty of spots where you can shine like the stars you are. Whether you're a master organizer, a creative genius, or just someone with a big heart and willing hands, we've got a place for you!

So put on your cape (or your Emerson t-shirt), unleash your inner superhero, and let's make some magic happen! Remember, volunteering is not just about making a difference; it's also about having fun along the way.

Ready to join us? Sign up now and get ready for an adventure like no other!

With gratitude,

Merlin Edwards II

PTA AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASSES

Hi! We're Rana, Jenny, and Chelle, the Emerson PTA Enrichment and School Support Team that programs the PTA After School Classes. Our goal is to provide EVERYONE at Emerson with after school on-site care options.

In addition to enrichment, PTA After School Classes provide an unmet need for part-time after school care for up to one third of our Emerson families. Our team prioritized providing classes everyday for Kindergarten/TK, classes everyday for all grades after dismissal, and two class subjects each day.

Families can sign up for PTA After School Classes even if they are already enrolled in LEARNS/Kids World, and they can request scholarships as well.

Registration for PTA After School Classes opens at noon on Thursday August 31. We have a robust roster of returning classes like Chess, Robotics, Ukulele and some new ones, including Mandarin and Coding. Spanish with Maestra Medina will return for Spring 2024.

Instructions for how to register and class descriptions will be sent home in Look Folders before August 31st, and also sent through Remind.

Scholarships are available; please email requests to: enrichment@emersonelementary.org

We suggest you create your profile at Homeroom.com (if you haven't already) before August 31st.

PTA After School Classes for Fall 2023 run from September 11 through December 22, excluding BUSD holidays.

URGENT NEED for our Enrichment Team: boots-on-the-ground Class Managers who can manage the first two weeks of parent volunteers (affectionately "cat herders"!) and emergencies as they arise. This is a recurring role, separate from one-time volunteers for the 15-minute shifts during the first two weeks. Ideal volunteers for Class Managers: lives near school, flexible afternoon schedule (at least one day of the week). We need you to launch this program! Please help out, especially if you sign up for After School Classes!

Email: enrichment@emersonelementary.org

INDOOR AIR QUALITY (IAQ) DASHBOARD

Did you know BUSD has an Air Quality Response Plan for our schools?  In addition to valuable information to learn more about how Air Quality might impact our community (in the event of particulate from fires, etc), Berkeley Unified has created a public dashboard that utilizes data from Indoor Air Quality sensors at each school site that can help our community understand air quality factors in our schools and in our students’ classrooms.

To use this dashboard, first click into the Emerson location (see below)

Map showing the Emerson School site on the BUSD air quality dashboard

Then click on the Blue Circle (this is the number of total sensors – at Emerson, there are 18 units). Each classroom is then listed out by EES # XX, once you click into this, there is a breakdown of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), CO2 (Carbon Dioxide), Temperature, and Relative Humidity.

Map view showing clicked on Emerson site and expanded sensors for each classroom.

Occasionally, a classroom sensor may be temporarily unavailable, but it is still tracking data; you can request a copy of the data by emailing the district’s Public Information Office

Expanded view of a single classroom air quality sensor information

From here, you can click on each of the 4 categories to check on classroom temperature, VOCs, Co2 levels, and relative humidity. Please share this resource with members of your community— each site within BUSD has these sensors!

MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Families,

Welcome to the 2023- 2024 school year! We are glad you are here. As I begin my fifth year as School Principal, I am grateful to be a part of this vibrant community of exceptional students, dedicated staff, and caring parents. We hope you join us on Thursday, August 31st, from 5:30 - 7pm for Back to School Night. Meet us on the blacktop for the Principal and PTA Message, and then go to your child’s classroom to meet the teacher.

Many of the pandemic restrictions have been lifted. However, we anticipate that COVID-19 will still occur this school year. As in the past, please continue to monitor your child for symptoms and keep your child home if they are sick. If your child tests positive for COVID-19, do not send them to school and report to covidcase@berkeley.net and leahlopez@berkeley.net. When you report to both email addresses, we will clear your student’s absence and the District Nurse will send you directions regarding when your child can return to school. For more COVID-19 information, please read the updated guidance, which is available on the district website: https://www.berkeleyschools.net/covid/campus-safety

One of our goals this school year is improved attendance! Did you know that Emerson has a higher truancy rate than the district average? We are confident we can do better. Please plan your trips and vacations for times that school is not in session (Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring Break). Please partner with us to ensure that your child is on time each day. Emerson is an early start school. The gate on the blacktop opens at 8:00 am each morning, which is the start of the staff duty day. We ask that you say goodbye to your child at the gate and let them go directly to their classroom. At 8:10 am, the blacktop gate will close. After that, students need to enter the school through the main office on Forest Avenue. At 8:15 am students will be tardy. At 8:40 am students will be considered late. After three late arrivals, students will be considered truant and receive a notification from the office. Let’s do our best to have students on time each day – every instructional minute counts toward a child’s future success.

Please complete the Free/Reduced Lunch Form which was sent home in last week’s look folder.  Emerson was able to receive Federal and State funding for this school year, which helps support our intervention programs. We are asking every family to complete the free/reduced form (even if you don’t think you qualify or plan to eat the school breakfast/ lunch): https://secure.ezmealapp.com. The deadline for this form is October 1st, 2023 but we hope you will complete it today.

Finally, please do not hesitate to reach out with your questions or concerns. Most mornings I can be found at the Blacktop Gate at the start of school. You can also reach out via email to janaholmes@berkeley.net. Let’s keep in touch and have a great school year!

Take care,

Jana Holmes

I am looking forward to another creative year with Emerson's artists!

PTA AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT CLASSES

Hi! We're Rana, Jenny and Chelle, the Emerson PTA Enrichment and School Support Team that programs PTA After School Classes.

Registration for PTA After School Classes opens at noon on Wednesday August 30. We have a robust roster of returning classes like Chess, Robotics, Ukulele and some new ones, including Mandarin and Coding. Spanish with Maestra Medina will return for Spring 2024.

Instructions for how to register and class descriptions will be sent home in Look Folders before August 30th, and also sent through Remind.

Scholarships are available; please email requests to: enrichment@emersonelementary.org

We suggest you create your profile at Homeroom.com (if you haven't already) before August 30th.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Families,

Thank you for another successful year at our beloved school! As we say goodbye for the summer, we are thankful that the pandemic has ended. The restrictions have been lifted and we were able to enjoy each other’s company. This year we came together at Grade Level Play Dates, and enjoyed the Family Art Night, The Move-A-Thon, Equity Circles, Meetings on the Bridge, All School Meetings, and more. The Spring Open House was a big success, with parents enjoying an opportunity to see many exciting classroom projects.

We look forward to even more community events in the future. The Emerson Dad’s Club is hoping to revive and bring back some more pre-pandemic events while building camaraderie, if you are interested in joining please email Nathan Stahlhut at dadsclub@emersonelementary.org

Let’s welcome our new PTA Board and President Merlin Edwards II. Rachel Terp will join Krysten Curtis, who is continuing as Vice President. We are still looking for more help with Communications, which involves the weekly BearFacts publication and the Where’s Waldo student directory. Please email board@emersonelementary.org if you are interested in helping.  We thank our outgoing PTA Treasurer Scott Hoffmeister, who volunteered for seven years, putting in many hours overseeing the finances to ensure we were accountable and successful. Big Smile to Rose Lynn Abesemis-Bell, who has been pivotal to our Communications, Staff Appreciation, and much more. We are also grateful to President Rana Cho, and Vice President Arabelle Malinis, who contributed in huge ways during the past two school years. Thank you to our PTA Leadership - we appreciate you!

We encourage you to fight the “summer slide” by challenging your student to read this summer.   You can keep track of your child’s reading using these tools provided by our Literacy Coach, Ms. Jeannie. Although these are optional and will not be turned in, you may find it motivational to track summer reading using this fun log: OPTIONAL Emerson Summer Reading Log. Here are some bingo reading cards as well: Summer Reading Bingo, Summer Break Reading Bingo, Spanish version, and Let's Read Summer Bingo. One more option is the 1st - 8th Grade Summer Reading Challenge, hosted by Cal Football player Patrick Laird. All students who complete their summer log will receive 2 free tickets to the Idaho game on September 16th. Get information here. Let’s make this a summer full of books!

Finally, it’s not too late to register for summer school. There is one last chance to sign up for summer school, if you haven’t done so already. Here is the information for the BUSD Summer LEARNS program at Oxford (offered June 5- August 11). To register, click here.

If you are returning to Emerson in the fall, please mark your calendar for Wednesday, August 16th (early release day) as the first day of school. Class lists will be posted the previous Friday at 4:00 pm on the blacktop. This a friendly reminder that Emerson does not accept requests for particular teachers or friends in classes. The class lists are carefully designed by our experienced Emerson staff to balance student needs and we do not accept parent requests.   Thank you for your understanding.

Have a wonderful and safe summer,

Jana Holmes

PTA UPDATE

Our Emerson PTA closes out the year with bounce houses and the Fifth Grade Promotion. Each year since the pandemic began, our community events have gradually built trust by meeting each other where we’re at. Slowly but surely we’re reconnecting our Emerson community.

We thank our PTA board members for supporting Emerson families, teachers and staff, and Principal Holmes, through fundraising and supporting programs and resources for every Emerson student. A special spotlight on Rose Lynn Abesamis-Bell and Scott Hofmeister who leave Emerson so much stronger after the years they have dedicated to the PTA Board.

And more thanks to our Grade Parents who make the school day more complete, supporting classrooms and grade-wide events.

Please support our Emerson community by renewing your PTA membership when we return in August. Look for our next PTA President Merlin Edwards and the incoming elected board - we are already planning for an engaging and inclusive school year for Fall 2023!

Best,

Rana Cho

JOIN THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM FOR 2023-24

The BearFacts is just one piece of Emerson’s PTA communication universe. This includes the Family Handbook, Communications Card, Where’s Waldo School Directory, BearFacts, Emerson Website, Remind, and more! As you can imagine, it takes a team of people to hold different parts to make it all happen. As you think about next year and your participation in the life of Emerson School, consider joining the Communications Team. For more information or to volunteer, email communications@emersonelementary.org… you won’t regret it!

Thank you BearFacts Team!

This is the last issue of the BearFacts for the 2022-23 school year, your weekly Emerson newsletter that has kept you in-the-know. Behind the scenes, every week, without fail, was a team of parent volunteers who rotated as editors preparing the newsletter. This team and a handful of PTA Board members and Ms. Holmes would then review the draft so it was ready to go live on the Emerson News page on our website, in your Remind, and in your email inboxes every Thursday morning!

We want to acknowledge those who submitted content: community information, special events, student artwork with Ms. Ames, Library Corner with Ms. Rachel, the Equity Corner, PTA updates, Ms. Holmes’ weekly letter, and so much more. Thank you to our Editors: Amy Fire, Nathan Fisher, Ashleigh Kanat, Jenn Petrucelli, Carol Wang, and Robert Lewis, with support from Rose Lynn Abesamis-Bell. We want to give special recognition to our graduating editors who have been serving for all or most of their years at Emerson as Editors and PTA Communications Leads: Nathan (Tommy), Ashleigh (Helio), Jenn (Ari) and Rose Lynn (Nora).

Yearbook Gratitudes!

Special thanks to 5th grade Aksel’s dad, David Miller for serving as the head editor of the Emerson Yearbook starting during the pandemic to this year’s issue! Thank you David for helping create a special place for our community and our kids to hold their memories of Emerson.

Tuesday, May 30th, will be a student reward day!  The After School Kids World program has reserved Jumpy Houses and is generous enough to share them with the whole school.  Each lunch recess will be longer so all students, even those not in Kids World, can join the fun.  In order for your child to participate, we need a completed Waiver of Liability form. This form was sent home in backpacks on Monday.  You can obtain a copy from the front office, or print out this form and return to the front office or your child’s teacher.  Your child will not be able to participate if we do not receive this completed form.

It’s hard to believe, but it’s time to say goodbye to our 5th Grade Class.  The Promotion Ceremony will take place on our school blacktop on the last day of school, which is Friday, June 2nd. We will have two reserved chairs for each family.  Additional family members/guests  are welcome to bring their own chairs or stand. The ceremony will last until approximately 10:15 am. We look forward to honoring this great group of students.

On Tuesday, May 23rd we approved our new PTA Board for the 2023- 2024 School Year.  We want to thank outgoing President Rana Cho for all her hard work and dedication during such a difficult time for our community.  We applaud her for caring for us in the midst of a global pandemic- You rock, Rana!

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Families,

It’s a very busy time of year.  The end-of-the-year assessments are wrapping up, and we will be sending home Winter STARS and DIBELS results in your child’s backpacks later this week. Thank you for sending your students to us well-rested and ready to learn during these last busy weeks of the school year.

In case you were unable to attend some of our Spring Events you can find the links here. The May All School meeting recognized our final Student Shout Outs, and there were many student performances. If you missed it or would like to enjoy it again, here is the link: https://youtu.be/ff3oO9yXpnQ. The 5th Grade students safely returned from their Sleep Away Camping trip to Camp Arroyo in the beautiful Livermore Hills, and the teachers have shared photos in their newsletters and emails. The Move-a-Thon was a huge success and engaged many families from our community. Last Friday, Kids World students and parents enjoyed a Friday evening performance of the original musical “The Field Trip of Doom” written and directed by our own talented James Small.  If you would like to enjoy the play, check out this video recording here:  https://youtu.be/_Um4Pr52zYE.  The students did a wonderful job with the hour-long performance, which included approximately 50 students! There will be an encore performance for the students and staff this week.

The Emerson Open House is this evening Thursday, May 18, from 5:30 - 7 pm. We look forward to welcoming you on campus to see what we have been up to this Spring. You are encouraged to bring your student with you so they can explain the projects and assignments you will see in the classrooms. This is an opportunity for you to visit the classroom of the grade level your child will matriculate to in the fall.  Don’t forget to stop by the Art Room (Room 11) to collect your student’s projects to take home with you.  We are excited to see you on campus this week.

Mark your calendar for the first annual Pride Parade, which is next Friday, May 26 at 8:30 am.  Did you know that the district has adopted a Welcoming Schools curriculum that explicitly supports the LGBTQ community and promotes inclusion for all?  The Emerson 5 B’s include “Be An Ally” which we intend to do by wearing our Rainbow colors and marching next Friday.  You are welcome to join us on the blacktop and walk through the community - wear your comfortable shoes!  We are so fortunate to live in the beautiful Bay Area where equity and diversity are celebrated.

Take care,

Jana Holmes

Teacher Staff Appreciation Week Thanks!

Thank you families for your participation in Emerson’s Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! Many thanks to the PTA, volunteers and donors, and each student and family that sent some gratitude greetings to an Emerson Staff member. We held a potluck breakfast brunch on Monday, Ms. Holmes treated the staff to her own appreciation goodies, goodies bags were delivered to each and every staff member, and we wrapped up the week with a luncheon with salads, sweets, lumpia, Bahn Mi sandwiches and more! All week, flowers and cards descended up the staff. If the week flew by you, it’s never too late to send some words of thanks a treat!  There is a lot of love here at Emerson and let's share it whenever we can! The end of the year is in less than two weeks.
