Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Families,

When we look at attendance, we see that students are engaging in distance learning at a higher rate than what we saw last spring. Staff is working diligently to create meaningful, goal-focused lessons that are engaging for students.  Caregivers are taking an active role in supporting student logins, access to Seesaw, and Google classroom.  Our community is pulling together to support the children, and we are happy to be partners in education with you.

It is my pleasure to introduce our new Librarian, Ms. Budge, who will begin her transition to Emerson on Monday, October 26.  Ms. Budge brings a strong background in elementary education, with years of local experience as a fifth-grade teacher.  She is excited to bring her passion for multicultural literature and student advocacy to Emerson.  We want to thank Ms. Kneeland who has done an excellent job as our long-term substitute since the beginning of the school year.

By now many are familiar with the EDHUB and the resources available to families there.  The EDHUB is located in the Adult School parking lot.  The new hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:30- 5:30 pm.  Families are encouraged to go to the hub for your Chromebook and technology needs.  You can also find leveled reading books and various support materials there.  Here is a link to the website with more information: https://www.berkeleypublicschoolsfund.org/ed-hub/.

Please note that the school year calendar has been revised.  Next week we will have school on Friday, October 30.  We are encouraging students to celebrate Spirit Day by wearing a costume to their Zoom meetings on the 30th.  The end of the first Trimester is now Friday, November 6.  Parent-teacher conferences will take place the week of November 16. School will not be in session on Friday, November 20.

Don’t forget to join our Special All School Meeting next Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 9:15 am.  The Little Explorer Petting Zoo will introduce four surprise, creepy creatures, in honor of the Halloween season.  This will be a fun and educational event.  Join here: https://us02web.zoom.us/s/84150606420

In the weeks ahead we will learn more about the Superintendent and Board’s decisions regarding in-person learning.  We will collaborate on the many changes and adjustments to come. Let’s continue to be honest with each other and work together toward our common goals of safely and superbly educating our students.

Take good care,  Jana Holmes

Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Families,

This week we celebrate Indigenous People’s Day.  Now is a good time to reflect on our nation’s history and the importance of recognizing its first inhabitants. This is also an opportunity for us to stand as Allies with Native Americans, as we learn about an often overlooked yet extremely important shared American history.  If you want to plan some ways to celebrate, here is an article that gives some practical, yet meaningful suggestions.

Our talented Emerson parent volunteer Ms. Abesamis-Bell led a parent team to update the Emerson PTA website to include a distance learning site.  It is up and running.  We are including our Staff Shout Outs, Flips Grids, and lots of pertinent information on this site. Feel free to take a look:

In addition, thank you to Emerson staff, including Ms. Carter, Ms. Suzuki, Ms. Weddle, Ms. Marlies, who collaborated with our parent volunteers including, Ms. Kanat, Ms. Petrucelli, Mr. Hofmeister, Ms. Lostuvali and Mr. Black to update our Family Handbook. Please take a look at this useful resource, here.

We are beginning the Library book distribution next week in front of Emerson.  These books will be surprise grab bags, and include many books of different genre/topics and reading levels. These books will be available on Monday and Tuesday afternoons from 3-5PM beginning next week:

K/1 - 10/19 & 10/20

2/3 - 10/26 & 10/27

4/5 - 11/2 & 11/3

We are also asking for parent volunteers to help with the library book distribution.  If you are willing and available, please email me at janaholmes@berkeley.net.

Please note that the end of the trimester has been moved to November 6th.  This means we will have school Friday, October 30. Parent-teacher conferences will now be held Nov 16 - Nov. 20th. During conferences students will attend morning class meetings and be assigned class work. A/B groups will not meet the week of conferences. There will not be school on Friday, November 20.

Lastly, we are holding a special All School Meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 9:15 am in honor of the Halloween Season.  The Little Explorer Petting Zoo will visit with four surprise creepy creatures.

Take good care and thank you for your support of Emerson.

Sincerely,

Jana Holmes

Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,

As I write this letter, I am excited and also anxious of the news that Berkeley schools may begin the process of Reopening Elementary Schools.  I’m sure this update brings many mixed emotions and questions.  At this time, we do not have an exact date for the school reopening.  You will receive a survey from the district office to gather parent input to help with this decision. In addition, Superintendent Stephens has introduced the

School Reopening Dashboard, which I invite you to visit regularly at https://www.berkeleyschools.net/coronavirus/.  Here you will find updates regarding progress made toward safety protocols, regular COVID testing for staff and the preparation of school facilities, etc.  As we transition back to campus, we encourage you to stay engaged with BUSD Board meetings, along with our school PTA, School Site Council, and ELAC meetings. We will continue to communicate through our newly enhanced distance learning website at https://emerson.berkeleypta.org/distance-learning, Remind messages, Illuminate emails and teacher classrooms.  As always,  you are welcome to reach out to me through email, the Remind application, and phone calls.

This week, we are pleased to send home Science Materials for our 4th and 5th-grade students.  Each student will receive a drawstring backpack filled with supplies to support science lessons.  In addition, 2nd-grade homeroom teachers are sending home the Handwriting Without Tears workbook for student use. If you are a parent of a 2nd, 4th or 5th grader, please come to Emerson on Thursday or Friday between 2-4 pm this week.  As always, please wear your PPE and social distance.  Until we are permanently back on campus, we anticipate that we will continue to ask parents to come to the school periodically to pick up study materials. We appreciate your patience and partnership as we work to support students to the best of our ability.

We recognize that the continual societal changes contribute to stress and anxiety amongst staff and students.  We are pleased to welcome School-Based Therapist Ms. Marlies Rosmark to present at the PTA Association meeting this evening.  We will begin at 6:00 pm with a brief business meeting, followed by a 45 minutes workshop featuring strategies to manage parent and student stress during distance learning.  You can join the meeting here.

Please remember there will not be school for students on Monday, Oct. 12th due to a Staff Development Day.  We hope you enjoy a long weekend with your family.

Take care,

Jana Holmes

Books from the Emerson Library

Starting on Monday, October 19, Emerson's library will begin checking out book bags to students. These book bags are intended to foster support for each child's love of reading, in the same way that library visits and check-outs do when we are physically together in school - they are not tied to in-classroom curriculum, and are meant purely for enjoyment. While the library is not able to support individual requests for books at this time, each bag has been carefully curated by the librarian with a mix of books we think would be fun for each grade level. Book bags will be made for every student, and will be available for curbside pick-up on Monday and Tuesday afternoon of each week, on a rotating schedule, beginning with Kindergarten and 1st grade on Monday 10/19 and Tuesday 10/20.

Best, Ms. Kneeland, Librarian

October ‘Shout Outs’!

Hello, Emerson Community! We want to celebrate and congratulate our October Shout Out Students! Please check out this Flipgrid to see special video shout outs from your teachers. https://flipgrid.com/+octobershoutouts

As always, have a fine, fine day!

Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,

Welcome to the month of October! We are hoping a new month will bring cooler weather, an end to the wildfires and declining Covid cases. As you know, social and racial justice concerns continue to be on the forefront.  One way to bring about meaningful change is through our legislative choices and political leaders. If you haven’t registered to vote, there's still time. In Alameda County the deadline is October 19. You may visit acvote.org for more information and to register.

In case you missed it, we are proud to continue Rainbow Friday’s at Emerson!  Berkeley Unified has adopted the Welcoming Schools curriculum, which incorporates lessons which promote an inclusive and safe learning environment for students.  These lessons work to prevent bias based bullying and help students understand gender and the LGBTQ community.  We have taken it upon ourselves to go a step further and each Friday we encourage staff and students to wear Rainbow colors, displayed during our Zoom meetings, as a symbol of our caring community.  We will have an All School Meeting this Friday, Oct. 2 at 9 am and we encourage you to join us in rainbow solidarity.

Last week, state health officials indicated that Alameda County has moved from “widespread” Covid cases (purple) to “substantial” (red) category, which means that more businesses can re-open with restrictions.  In addition, according to state and health guidelines, if we stay in this category for at least two weeks we can plan to return to on-site teaching.  Of course, the district office will need to meet expectations and collaborate with district staff, but we will be one step closer to returning to the campus.  Let’s all continue to be as safe as possible so we can continue this trajectory, bring our infection rates down and open up the schools.

I want to make you aware of some upcoming dates/events in October:

- Please join the PTA Association Meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8th.  The Special Guest Speaker will be our School Based Therapist, Ms. Marlies Rosmark, who will share tips on managing parent and students stress during distance learning.  The meeting starts at 6 pm.

-On Monday, October 12, there will be no school for students because all district staff will be in professional development.

-Parent/ teacher conferences take place the last week of October. Report cards will be issued the last week of October.  Students will have half days from Monday, Oct. 26- Oct. 29, with no school on Friday, Oct. 30.

-We will hold a special All School Meeting to celebrate Halloween on Wednesday, October 28.  The Little Explorer Petting Zoo will introduce students to four creepy animals, teaching about their habitats and how they earned such a scary reputation. Please mark your calendars and be sure to join the fun!

Thank you for your continued support of Emerson.  We are grateful for you and appreciate you during this challenging time.

Sincerely,

Jana Holmes

Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,

As we enter near the end of September, it’s a good time to reflect on all we have already accomplished.  Teachers conferenced with parents one on one, we hosted a virtual Back To School Night, we enjoyed our first All School Meeting, and students are finishing up their STAR assessments.  In addition, we assembled and distributed over 300 bags of learning materials to support distance learning.  Shout Out to Dad’s Club Leader, Mr. Rob Kopf, who personally dropped off the final bags of materials to families last weekend. Wow- that’s a lot of activity in one month, and that’s not even all of it!

Thank you to our parents for stepping up to the plate as volunteers.  We are getting very close to being fully staffed with Room Parents.  On Sunday, PTA hosted an afternoon Bingo Happy Hour, which was a fun way to build community with families.  Be sure to mark your calendar for the Oct. 8 PTA Association meeting at 6 pm, which will feature guest speaker Ms. Marlies Rosmark, School-Based Therapist.  She will share tips for managing student and parent stress during Distance Learning (Zoom link to follow).  We encourage you to take advantage of the events our PTA is planning to support parents and strengthen our community.

This week marks the official beginning of Fall. Your student’s academic and social and emotional health continues to be our top priority.  We hope you are taking advantage of the Special Classes, such as Art, Music, Science, PE, Gardening, and Library.  However, I will remind you that these classes are optional and are not graded.  Attendance will continue to be taken during the Synchronous Teacher Lessons (Large and Small Group Zooms) and student’s classwork for the Homeroom teacher is graded. If your student will miss their Homeroom teacher’s class, please inform us of the reason for the absence and the date missed by emailing your Homeroom Teacher and Ms. Leah Lopez, Office Assistant at leahlopez@berkeley.net

This week we are holding elections for the parent and community positions for the School Site Council Leadership Committee  This is the governing body for Emerson, which works with staff and the School Principal to create, oversee, and approve the School Site Plan.  If you have not voted yet, please do so by completing this form prior to noon tomorrow, Friday, September 25. After the votes are tallied by the Principal and District Leadership, the results will be posted by September 30.

If you have not done so yet, please participate in the US Census.  The Census only happens once every ten years and is an important tool used to determine funding allocations for state and local programs.  The Census has an effect on money provided for school programs such as nutrition, special education, technology, and health programs.  You can participate electronically here: https://2020census.gov/en.html.

Thank you for your support of Emerson.

Sincerely,

Jana Holmes

Teachers’ Corner - Rainbow Fridays - 🌈

Hello Emerson Community! Starting this Friday, September 25th, we are going to continue last year's tradition of Rainbow Fridays! 🌈 Emerson is a community where we celebrate our freedom to express who we are and who we love, and Rainbow Fridays help us to promote inclusivity and allyship for our LGBTQ community members! 🌈 Here are some messages from Emerson staff about why Rainbow Fridays are important to us. 🌈 We can't wait to see your Rainbow shirts, accessories and more! 🌈

Next week, we will begin the "Student Corner" in our Bear Facts Newsletter. On this Padlet, we are asking students to share their answer to the question: "What do Rainbow Fridays mean to you?" Students can be as creative as they want and showcase their answer with a song, a dance, a picture, a speech, a story or any other way that inspires them! This Padlet will then be shared in next week's Bear Facts Newsletter!

If you have any questions about Rainbow Fridays, please feel free to reach out to any Emerson staff member. Also, here are some resources from our Welcoming Schools curriculum to help open up space and dialogue with your family around the Emerson values of inclusivity and allyship:
Gender & Children: A Place to Begin

Teachers’ Corner from Ms. Stuppi and Ms. Barnes (3rd Grade)

Gratitude is part of our mindfulness strategies in third grade. Last week the 3rd grade students put gratitude into practice by writing thank you letters to CalFire Firefighters. It was heartwarming to see how sincere and thoughtful the kids were. They also loved being able to take concrete action and send off a true act of kindness.

Here are just a couple of examples of their wonderful work.

Art Kits are making art time so much fun!

It has been so great to have access to so many supplies for the art classes I am teaching.  I realize that there is so much to manage, so I truly appreciate you helping your kids have their art kits ready.  If your child is not at home for their art time, please try to remember to send those kits with them wherever they are going. There are a few items that are not in the kits, but would be great to have if you can help out: scissors, a "messy mat" (a grocery bag cut open works well to protect your table surface) and some kind of container for water (like a yogurt or cottage cheese cup).  Thanks so much.

Quick reference for days of the week each grade has art:

  • Kindergarten: Thursday mornings

  • 1st grade: Monday mornings

  • 2nd grade: Wednesday afternoons

  • 3rd grade: Thursday afternoons

  • 4th grade: Wednesday mornings

  • 5th grade: Monday afternoons

Thanks again, Ms. Ames

Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,

I want to thank everyone for contributing to the success of our Materials Distribution this week and last.  Despite the scary skies and terrible air quality, working together we were able to send home the pizza boxes full of art supplies and the blue bags with workbooks and study materials.  Thank you to all the parents who donated to the art program, so that students would have creative tools to use at home.  We appreciate the time that our parent and community volunteers took to assemble them, including Ms. Michelle Falise, Ms. Jane Stahlhut, and our former Emerson Principal Susan Hodge.  During our gloomy days, it was truly a bright spot to see parents and students again in person.

As previously mentioned, your student will be taking the STAR test.  This is not a test for a grade. Overall, it is used to help teachers have a better understanding of what students know and can do in the areas of reading and writing.  It is used for teachers to best know how to instruct students.  In order to prepare, your students should attend class, get a good night’s sleep, and eat breakfast.  On the day of the test, you may help your student log in to the site, but you should not provide assistance during the assessment.  Your student will need headphones or a computer with audio since some of the questions are read aloud.  Please let your teacher know if you have any questions.

I want to remind you that attendance is required, even during distance learning.  Teachers are working hard to support students emotionally and socially while educating students according to state standards.  Regular attendance will help us meet our goals.  Although we encourage you to attend the school day enrichment classes: Art, Gardening, Library, Music, Science, and PE, they are not required.  If your student will miss their Homeroom teacher’s class, please inform us of the reason for the absence and the date missed by emailing your Homeroom Teacher and Ms. Leah Lopez, Office Assistant at leahlopez@berkeley.net

In conclusion, I want to acknowledge how difficult this time continues to be.  The challenges keep unfolding.  Thank you for your positive community spirit, your support, and your dedication to Emerson.  You are invited to join the Parent Support Group with our School-Based Therapist, Ms. Marlies Rosmark.  It will be a combination of a support group and a learning space. You will discover new tools to manage stress and anxiety for both parents and students.  The groups will meet on Zoom and be small, only about six participants.  This is a free offering. If you are interested please email mrosmark@bacr.org or call 510- 559- 3039 as soon as possible. The group will begin soon.

Take good care,

Jana Holmes

Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Community,

We hope you enjoyed a safe Labor Day weekend and managed the Bay Area heatwave.  We certainly have no storage of challenges. Despite all that is going on, I am thankful for our community and was happy to remind students what makes Emerson special last week during our All School Meeting.  At the conclusion of the meeting, I invited students to create and send me a poem, video, or picture with their interpretation of the 5 B’s and The Emerson Way. I have already received several videos and drawings, which I plan to share with you and the Emerson staff.  When we hear how our school positively affects and motivates our students, it gives us all the inspiration to continue to do our best. Your student can still participate by emailing me their creation at  janaholmes@berkeley.net. We love our students and want them to thrive!

Please carve out the time to visit Emerson this week to pick up your student’s materials and art supplies.  School staff and volunteers spent many hours packing bags with student workbooks, school supplies, and art kits to support distance learning.  You will need/want these bags to enhance your student’s school experience.  Come to the school today,  Thursday, Sept 10, between 2- 4 pm or tomorrow (last day) between 3- 5 pm.  As always, be sure to social distance and wear your PPE.

Now is the time to sign up to be a volunteer.  We need Room Parents for the Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 4th Grade classrooms.  Room Parents are key to the effective functioning of our school- especially this year when the emphasis is on communication and community building.  If you can help, please email Ms. Crystal Goldsmith at cluetters09@gmail.com or sign up here.

We are also seeking School Site Council members.  This committee meets monthly and is the governing body that works with the Principal to oversee and create the School Site Plan.  This team also reviews and approves the allocation of state funding for Emerson. Please nominate yourself here. Nominations close tomorrow and are followed by the elections later this month.

As mentioned in last week’s Message, students will be taking literacy, math, and reading assessments starting September 14 through September 25.   Students will need headphones, speakers, or audio on their device because test questions are read out loud by the computer. Parents may help students get online, through the Renaissance Link found on the Library website.  Once students begin they should not receive assistance from family members, devices, or any other resources. It is important that teachers have an accurate understanding of student’s knowledge as we begin the school year.

I want to give you an update about what the school is doing to prepare for a return to on-site instruction.  I recently participated in a facility walk with the district’s Risk Manager Mr. John Ortega.  The district has installed touchless faucets, is preparing to install additional handwashing stations, HEPA air filters for the classrooms, additional hand sanitizer stations, and markings for one-way hallways and enter and exit doors.  Working with Alameda County and Berkeley Health officials, when the county moves from widespread COVID-19 cases, appropriate steps will be taken to return to on-campus learning.  I encourage you to tune into the School Board meeting on Wednesday nights, to stay updated about district decisions. You may also email concerns to the district at covidconcerns@berkeley.net.

As a school community, we recognize the mental and emotional strain of this pandemic and its effects.  In response, Ms. Marlies Rosmark, School-based Therapist, is offering a free virtual parent group.  The group will be supporting each other and managing anxiety, both your own and your child’s. If you are interested, please contact mrosmark@bacr.org.

Thank you for your support and take good care,

Jana Holmes

Seeking Room Parent Volunteers
Would you like to be part of a Room Parent team for your child’s classroom?
Room Parents play an important role in shaping the experience of students and families at Emerson. Support the classroom teacher, build community, and foster equity and inclusion. Room parents get to know classroom families and reach out to them on behalf of the classroom teacher (e.g., coordinating class parties, identifying field trip chaperones) and the PTA (e.g., inviting families to attend community events or helping find volunteers). We are currently asking for multiple volunteers per grade level, so that once classroom assignments are posted, we can mobilize quickly to share the work among many families in each classroom. We encourage families of color and those who speak other languages to join teams to make sure that everyone's voices are represented.
If interested in joining a room parent team, email Crystal Goldsmith (cluetters09@gmail.com) or sign up here.

Message from the Principal

Dear Emerson Families,

Feedback from the parent-teacher conferences was positive. The Staff enjoyed connecting with families to learn more about your hopes, expectations, and desires for the school year.  With distance learning, all of our school structures are new and the conference time was important to connect and build our community.  This week, we move into our full distance learning schedule.

We appreciate your patience as we work out the kinks with the Zoom links, times for Enrichment classes, and the transitions to A/B and small groups.  We encourage you to reach out to the teachers directly with your questions and concerns.  The staff email addresses can be found at: https://emerson.berkeleypta.org/teachers-staff.  Starting next week, PE teacher Coach Robinson will offer a Morning Wake-Up Stretch/Exercise session for K- 2 students on Mondays from 8- 8:45 am., and one for grades 3-5 on Fridays from 8- 8:45 am.  We hope students will take advantage of these additional PE opportunities.  Ms. Jeannette will begin the Gardening program for grades 3- 5 this week. For the first half of the year, gardening will be offered to students in grades 3-5.  During the Spring, we will rotate the program to Kinder- 2nd graders.   Your homeroom teacher will provide the schedule and links to the Enrichment classes.  Attendance is taken during the morning meetings. If your student will be absent please notify your homeroom teacher and Ms. Lopez, Office Assistant at Leahlopez@berkeley.net

In order for us to gain an understanding of our student’s academic starting point, teaching staff will work with parents to administer fall assessments.  Kindergarten students are assessed this week, and this information will help teachers create final groupings.  Between September 14 and 25, Grades 1- 5 will take Reading, Literacy, and Math assessments.  Students will need headphones, speakers, or audio on their device because test questions are read out loud by the computer. Parents may help students get online and log into the assessments, but once they begin, students should not receive assistance from family members, devices, or any other resources during the test. It is important that teachers have an accurate understanding of student’s knowledge as we begin the school year.

Next week will be a busy one- please plan to come to the school to pick up your students’ school materials afterschool.  We invite you to attend our Virtual Back to School Night on Thursday, September 10 at 7 pm. This will be an opportunity for you to hear more about the curriculum and expectations from the homeroom teachers.

We look forward to our first All School Meeting of the school year on Friday, September 4 at 9:00 am. We will celebrate the Emerson Way and learn more about why our school community is so amazing. Be sure to join us through this link: http://bit.ly/AllSchoolMtg, Passcode: 232525.

Sincerely,
Jana Holmes

Art Supply Kits coming soon!

On behalf of all of our students, thank you so much for all of the art supply donations.  We are all so lucky to get to be a part of this wonderful school community! The generosity of so many of the families (grandparents and former Emerson teachers, as well!) has meant that each student will get a nicely stocked pizza box of papers and supplies. I am busy, busy sorting through all of the packages of supplies that have come through the mail.  Ms. Gaby and Mrs. Holmes have been ordering supplies for your art kits as well.  And, if I still need more to make the kits complete, I will raid the supplies in the art room.  It has already been so fun to do art online with you, but I am really looking forward to you having some new (or slightly used) art materials so that we can do some more exciting projects!

Ms. Ames

Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

I write this message to you, sitting in my office, having just finished watching Mr. Phil's amazing annual 5th grade video with the whole school. I can hear the children laughing and playing on the yard from my window and I am filled with a sense of gratitude and joy. It is often hard to keep things in perspective. We get caught up with day to day challenges and routines and we just keep going. But today, seeing the 5th graders literally grow up before my very eyes, I can see the whole picture, at least for a minute! Our time with the children is fleeting, we do our best by them and by you, the parents, each and every day. We try to give them the right amount of independence balanced by support, academics balanced by play, and precision and procedures balanced by creativity and open mindedness. In the end, it is mostly about relationships. Taking the time to see each child as an individual and to celebrate their talents and special interests -- all the while building connections that stretch across the years. I am so thankful to be a part of the process, to be partners with you and the teachers in this beautiful endeavor. I am grateful for your support and your understanding. I especially appreciate your patience on those days that we "mess up". Teaching in an imperfect art, but art it is. Thank you for letting us join you in shaping these works of art that are your children. Much love and respect.

Fondly,
Susan Hodge
