MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Emerson Families,
Happy holidays! We have much to be grateful for within our special community. We appreciate our engaged parents, who planned a joyous Fall Festival last weekend. We are thankful for our teachers, who have hosted special events, such as the Latinx Storytelling Night and the Black Family Dinner. This month we look forward to the Literacy Night and the Rainbow Family Celebration. And, as always, everyone is invited to cheer our students’ Shout Out Awards and performances at the All School Meeting tomorrow morning. Emerson is a wonderful school and we thank you for your contributions.
Many of the extras we enjoy, such as field trips, a full physical education program, and excellent office support are made possible by your generous donations. We still have a ways to go to meet our Heart of Emerson Fundraising campaign goals. Would you consider donating this month? The ask is $650 per family, but we are happy with any donation that you can provide. You can see our progress and make a donation here: https://emersonelementary.org/heart-of-emerson.
One of our school-wide goals is attendance. We are pleased to share that our school attendance is improving, with the number of chronic absences reduced from 13% last year to 10% this year. Please continue to send your child on time to school everyday. If your child does have a fever or throws up or has diarrhea, please keep them home and contact our school Attendance Clerk, Ms. Michelle, at leahlopez@berkeley.net.
Another goal for Emerson is a welcoming and inclusive environment. We partner with caregivers in this work, because parents are a child’s first teacher. We invite you to join us for a PTA Equity Workshop entitled “Meeting on the Bridge” next Wednesday, November 13th from 5:30- 7:30 pm. The topic will be microaggressions and navigating cultures within a diverse community. Click here for more information and to register for childcare and dinner.
We are looking for parents to help us host our Fall/Winter School Tours. This is a great opportunity to help prospective families learn more about our school. You will be provided with all the information you’ll need to facilitate a small group as they tour Emerson. Tours will take place on Thursday mornings at 8:30am between the end of November and mid-January. Please sign up if you can donate some of your time to this worthy cause: School Tour Volunteer Sign Ups. You will have a fun time and learn more about Emerson yourself!
Take care,
Principal Holmes

ART CORNER
5th GRADE WORD ART INSPIRED BY PAUL KLEE
5th Graders each wrote a brief phrase about themselves and then carefully wrote the letters in a grid. We looked at the work of Paul Klee for inspiration– he often used a grid in his compositions and he even wrote out a very long poem in this way. Artists made sure that their letters touched the top and bottom of the squares so that they would create interesting negative shapes around the letters. They can be hard to read, but that's part of the fun of this style of art.
